Techne: the notion of bringing forth, making, brining together, gathering, producing; the root of "technology"

The origin of the word "technology" comes from the union of "techne" and "logos", literally, "the word of bringing forth or making". The Sophia Group embraces the etymological and historical implications in the study of technology by conceiving of its endeavours as poetic-creative business practices designed to let sophia emerge.

technology is today a by-product of the military industrial complex and global corporatism. With forced and pre-mature obsolescence, the exploitation of the workforce in the third world, and the pillaging and ensuing dumping of natural resources, corporatist technological practices are killing us, killing the planet, and further our alienation from the poetic (poiesis) possibilities of techne.

At The Sophia Group, we believe technological innovation begins with a way of thinking that understands the origins of techne and poiesis so that all making, all creating, comes from a holistic understanding of our relationship to creativity, to our organic environments, and to our ways of thinking and being.

The future of human civilization on the planet earth depends on this paradigm of holistic thinking that re-envisions techne, and hence technology into a way of being, rather than a wasteful and debased notion of profit-making. The Sophia Group lives by this thought.
